Small disclaimer before I start this post, these are my personal opinions and my intention is just to give an honest opinion based on my experience on whether it is worth it. It doesn't mean I am stopping anyone from going k!

So, we have all seen those instagram worthy pictures, boomerangs or videos about their molten egg yolk custard croissant, oozing out gleefully after it is cut open. Are we all excited to try it out? Yes we are! But does the croissant really live up to its name? Is it worth the hype?

The short answer is, NO.

The long answer? Read on >>

Did you know that Urban Bakery Works Hong Kong is the pioneer of the salted egg yolk croissant that is now ever-so popular? So I have gone right down to the source to try d' original molten egg yolk custard croissant!!

1. Molten Egg Yolk Custard Croissant

Price: HKD$22 (approx SGD$3.86)

First things first, the egg yolk definitely does not flow out as depicted in the advertisement banner. I repeat, it DOES NOT.

I know, I have seen on other blogs of the oozi-ness (is there even such a word haha) of their croissants - maybe it's just the one that I got, but mine definitely was a drought situation.

There isn't a picture of the croissant cut up, because the dough was so chewy and flaky, it was really hard to cut (especially with their plastic-y utensils). Furthermore, there wasn't anything oozing out so the picture of it cut up wouldn't show anything anyway.

2. Lava Cheese Croissant

Price: HKD$22 (approx SGD$3.86)

Another huge disappointment for me. Got soooome molten cheese-ish stuff flow out la, but seriously...it's not as per expectations. And again, the pastry was too chewy and flaky for my liking.

Plus, if i compare this to the molten egg yolk custard croissant, I'd rather spend my money on the latter.

3. Bloody Berry cake slice

Price: HKD$38 (approx SGD$6.66)

The syringe was what prompted me to try this cake! They do have a pretty catchy name for it - Bloody Berry. You might have already guessed it - it is raspberry sponge cake. The cream was light and the sponge was airy. The raspberry syrup was also adequately sweet yet sour. Overall, I think this was quite a good catch, probably leaving me a better impression of Urban Bakery than their croissants.

However, do note that after 5pm, they seem to have a 1-for-1 promotion on their cake slices. So look out for that if you intend to visit Urban Bakery for their cakes!

All in all, did I enjoy my experience at Urban Bakery? I would say so-so.

Would I come back again? Nope. I don't even need to think.

Having said so, please do feel free to go and try it out if you are interested to find out yourselves and if you happen to make a stop in Hong Kong!

Till next time!

Crystal
