By now, I am sure many of us are no strangers to cheese tarts. From Bake's penetration into the Singapore market, followed by similar gimmicks from many other bakeries, it leaves consumers with lots of questions regarding what is really worth the hype or is it just "meh".

In this blogpost, I will be introducing you to cheese tarts here in Hong Kong, where we find out whether the land of dim-sum also offers decent cheese tarts to satisfy our cravings. So for my fellow travelers, heads up if you're a fan of cheese tart and heading to HK real soon!

1. *BAKE Cheese Tarts*

I don't think this needs much introduction, considering how it has taken Singapore by storm and left Singaporeans queuing for up to 3 hours just to get their hands on one of these Japanese creations.

Nearest MTR Station: Causeway Bay MTR Station Exit D1

Address: Shop 10, B2/F, Sogo, 555 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay

Price: 1 for HKD$20 / 6 for HKD$110

The crust of the cheese tart is pretty hard and crunchy - which may be nice for some, and not for the others. The cheese filling was indeed pretty runny, living up to its name of being semi-molten, and it was also coupled with a slight pleasant salty taste once you bite in.

2. *Hanjuku Kabo*

It's right by the road so it should be pretty easy to spot. Despite its available spaces in the shop, they only have ONE small table for diners to stand around and have their pastries. Weird space management I would say...but anyway...if you want a box to contain your tarts, do tell them you are taking away, otherwise they wouldn't give you any container for it.

Nearest MTR Station: Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station Exit B2

Address: G/F, 6A Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

Price: 1 for HKD$22

Box provided only if you "take-away"

They have 3 different flavours (!!!) for the molten tarts:

Original Cheese

Green Tea

Chocolate

Original Cheese

Crust is thinner than BAKE's but the cheese inside seems to be runny-er!

Green Tea

Very runny matcha filling!! I would say this is a must-try if you visit Hanjuku Kobo. MUST!!! The matcha filling is slightly bitter (which is great, just the way I like it!).

Chocolate

To be honest...this just tastes like chocolate cake, just that the filling is wetter and softer. Probably skip this if you are not a fan of chocolate or sweet stuff.

3. *Maxim's Cake Lab*

Note: This outlet is different from all the Maxim confectioneries that you see in the MTR stations. There is only one Maxim's Cake Lab which is at Wan Chai.

Maxim's Cake Lab has only been established in 2015 and it already has quite a strong footing in the local bakery scene - which is quite impressive. Their lava cheese tarts are pretty well-received among the locals!

Nearest MTR Station: Wan Chai MTR Station Exit A2 (turn right after you exit)

Address: On Hong Commercial Building, 145 Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai

Price: 1 for HKD$14 / Buy 5 get 1 free

Box provided only if you buy 6 tarts.

Price-wise, Maxim's wins hands down. Taste-wise, it lacks the mild saltiness that is present in both BAKE's & Hanjuku Kobo's. The filling is like cheesecake, except more runny. As for the crust, it is pretty thin and fragile, which is a minus point for me as it breaks easily. But overall, Maxim's lava cheese tart is the most pocket friendly.

At the end of the day, if you were too lazy/too much in a rush to read this whole post (tsktsktsk haha just kidding!) , my conclusion for you is:

BAKE - Try their molten cheese tarts.

Hanjuku Kobo - Try their Green Tea Tarts.

Maxim's Cake Lab - Give it a try if you're tight on budget as it is the cheapest among these 3.

Definitely go try at least one when you're in HK to tick it off your bucketlist!

Till next time,

Crystal
