Hello Errrbody! So I have decided to start a #yumyuminmytumtum section to share some of the (more presentable) food that I have tried! I'm not a professional food blogger so food critics please hold your horses on your judgement! I am really merely just sharing my experience based on a layman's perspective so...I hope it gives a little bit of help on which places are worth trying or not!

Sumiya, which means charcoal (sumi) house (ya), is specialized in charcoal-grilled items and fresh seafood flown into Singapore a couple of times every week. They serve set meals, beverages and also alcoholic drinks at a pretty reasonable price.
Here's the lunch set menu:

What we ordered:
Mixed Kaisen Bara Don Set - $20.80
Today's Assorted Sashimi Set - $28.80
Anago Don Set - $21.80
The lunch set comes with:
Appetizer, salad, pickles, chawanmushi, miso soup & dessert
There is also FREE FLOW of Japanese green tea (YAY).
1) Mixed Kaisen Bara Don Set - $20.80
To be honest, I thought this was the most worth it set amongst what we ordered!

The entire set.

A slightly closer shot.

Another closer shot. (LOL it's obvious I'm obsessed with it)

Close up of the SALMON CHUNKS

Close up of the TUNA BELLY CHUNKS
(By the way, please don't mind the stray piece of congor eel in my bowl..my mum very kindly donated one piece of it to me from her Anago Don Set.)
The main dish itself had 3 types of marinated sashimi - salmon, tuna belly,...I really have no idea what's the last one. I'm not great with names but I AM A SASHIMI LOVER AND THESE 3 FISHES ARE DOWN RIGHT TASTY. The don is also generously topped with fish roe (both the small kind that you see in all sushi shops + the big round juicy succulent kind!!!).
The fish cubes are really fresh and succulent. Chunks huge enough for the texture when you chew on it, yet easily melts into your tatstebuds. To my pleasant surprise, there were also some small avocado cubes, which I thought was interesting as I am not a usual fan of avocado but these surprisingly tasted pretty nice too! The rice used in the don was sushi rice, which is a super duper plus point because I LOVE ANYTHING SUSHI. So eating this is like eating deconstructed sashimi sushi, except in bigger proportions (YES WHY NOT RIGHT).
Verdict: Definite must try
Taste: 10000/10 COME TASTE IT YOURSELF. IT'S GUD.
Price reasonableness: 9/10 it is considered affordable for the quality and quantity of food you get (do remember the sides that come along! Will cover some of it in the later part of this post!)
2) Today's Assorted Sashimi Set - $28.80
For this, it is what the name suggests - an assortment.

This plate of sashimi has already been...30% eaten cause someone couldn't wait...

I didn't eat this set so I can't tell you what are the pieces of sashimi on the left-est of the plate. But on the platter there are some peeled mini prawns, salmon pieces, tuna belly and the unknown sashimi on the left.
Again, to be really honest, the only upside of this set would be that it has these sashimi slices in slightly larger proportions than the Mixed Kaisen Bara Don Set above. Other than that...I feel that there isn't much difference.
Verdict: Probably could give it a miss
Taste: 10/10. It'll probably be the same as the Mixed Kaisen Bara Don since the sashimi pieces probably comes from the same cut of fish?
Price reasonableness: 7/10
3) Anago Don Set - $21.80

Right, at first glance we all thought "Cheyyy, unagi lor". So just a couple of minutes ago, the very suaku me went to google the difference between unagi and anago, AND BOY THERE IS INDEED A SLIGHT DIFFERENCE.
Anago VS Unagi
Anago - Saltwater eel
Unagi - Freshwater eel
Anago is less fatty and more delicate than unagi meat, and anago meat is normally served grilled & brushed with some sweet sauce.
Aiya but seriously come here eat who cares about what unagi vs anago, JUST EAT.

I am honestly not a big fan of this. I thought the anago meat was a little dry and basically...not as nice as the sashimi i had.
Having said so, the anago portion was quite big, in that sense that the piece of anago given was quite big la #explainingincircles
I would say for $21.80...unless you are a super big fan of anago (or unagi LOL), otherwise save that dollar and get the Mixed Kaisen Bara Don Set.
Verdict: Probably could give it a miss
Taste: 7/10. Anagi could be a little dry. But overall tastes decent.
Price reasonableness: 7/10
Moving on the the complimentary sides...
1. Appetizer
I am honestly not sure what the appetizer was. I was too overly-excited over the main course that I paid very little attention to the appetizer.
2. Pickles
Same thing, I don't think I really tasted the pickles. In fact...I don't even know which was the pickles. Okay before you start saying "GIRL HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW HOW A PICKLE LOOKS LIKE?", I show you a picture of what i think the appetizer and pickle was:

So these 2 guys, one of them has to be the pickle and the other one the appetizer. My best guess would be:
bowl of brownness = pickle & bowl of purple = appetizer?
Cause pickles are green right? So unless you are looking at GM pickles, otherwise it would not possibly be the purple one? But in any way, they are not the main highlight, so you don't have to feel bad about not eating them (at most $2 fly away only HAHA)
3) Salad
Just a mixture of green and purple lettuce with some cherry tomatoes. I am not a big fan of eating salad for my greens + I was so full after everything else, so I picked out the cherry tomato slices only (about 4 halves of a cherry tomato in total)
4) Chawanmushi
This was surprisingly nice. I am a huge fan of chawanmushi, till the extent that I used to make it at home weekly until I got so sick of it HAHA. Sumiya's chawanmushi was very silky and runny, the way I like it to be. I would say tastewise..probably a 8/10. Well, it does come free as a side, so just eat it la.
5) Miso soup
Don't think you guys need any more introduction to miso soup. Every Japanese food store has it, even those at Kopitiam. But I would say their miso soup was pretty standard. Nothing that wow-ed me. Just tastes like every other miso soup you taste out there.
6) Dessert
The dessert included was a mochi.

Alright, I know this isn't the prettiest dissection of the mochi, but it was really sticky so i had to pry it open with 2 forks. It had a cream and black sesame filling on the inside. I personally felt that the mochi skin was too thick and sticky, which made the mochi too chewy. The cream filling tasted like...y'know the cream in between the Oreo biscuits? It tasted like that, just that this was more runny. Black sesame paste was the standard kind. I personally don't really like this, because
#1 I don't like chewy stuff (Maybe it's also because of my braces)
#2 I dont really like black sesame paste, I think the taste is quite overpowering on its own
#3 The cream filling's taste is also slightly overwhelming, hence, it sort of becomes like a battle of taste between the cream and the black sesame.
Lastly, I just want to mention about the FREE FLOW of green tea.
It was good. It's the bitter kind of Japanese green tea (something like ayakata) which I love. I feel that this kind of japanese green tea goes super well with sashimi. And plus its FREE FLOW, means actually you don't have to order anymore drinks liao leh #worthit
At the end of the day, I would recommend for you guys to try Sumiya at least once especially if you love sushi and sashimi like I do! I couldn't really finish the whole meal (even the rice) by myself, so maybe you could share the set with a friend and go catch some other food together afterwards!
Till next time,
Crystal
